Next Steps

Once we begin the journey, it’s only normal to think, “What’s next?”

Spiritual growth is a lifelong commitment.

Here at Plainfield United Methodist Church (PUMC), part of our work is to equip people to help make the ways of God tangible in the world. There are 168 hours in a week. Our church service only constitutes about one of them. What are we doing with the other 167? Our heart is to see God’s people rise up. We want to see people grow in their relationship with God and others. We want to see healing, we want to see service, we want to see a wholehearted devotion to God. We want to see the power and love of God poured out over our city. And we want to be part of it.

Here you’ll find your next steps. Things that will allow you to seize the 167 hours beyond Sunday worship.

So what are you waiting for? Scroll down, and let’s take some next steps together.

Step One: Starting Point

“Meet PUMC” is a 30-minute orientation to PUMC. You’ll meet others who are new and leave with a next step to help you find your place within the church. This is a great way to become familiar with who we are and how we live our faith. No registration is needed for the in-person classes. Just show up! We can’t wait to meet you!

Step Two: Small Groups

Are you looking to connect with others at PUMC and grow your faith? One of the best ways to do that is to join a Small Group. The small group experience will help you see your faith story, understand how we live out our Christian faith at PUMC, and find ways to grow in your faith in this church community. You discover answers to questions like: Who is Jesus? Why is my faith important? What is Biblical justice? And more! There are groups for all ages and stages of life.

Step Three: Membership

When you become a member of PUMC, you promise to faithfully support the congregation’s ministries with your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. In return, you will gain an entire community willing to walk beside you in Christian faith.

What are the steps to becoming a member?

Complete a New Member Information Form

This form allows us to enter your information into our membership database. Download the New Member form here. Have Adobe Reader installed on your computer to download this form.

Schedule a time to meet with a Pastor

In this meeting, you will sit down one-on-one with a Pastor for a basic overview of what it means to be a member of the United Methodist Church. During the meeting, the pastor will help guide individuals to take the next step in discipleship and become dynamic, engaged followers of Jesus Christ.

Attend New Member Sunday

The Worship Team will pick a Sunday to welcome new members. We ask new members to come forward during the service and answer brief questions for membership together.

You can become a member in one of the following ways:

Profession of Faith - This is the initial entrance into membership in the church when one confesses faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior publicly for the first time. If you are not yet baptized, one of our Pastors will be happy to discuss your baptism and church membership with you.

Transfer of Membership - From another United Methodist Church or a Christian church of another denomination. We recognize Baptism from all other Christian churches. We do not require those who have received Christian Baptism in the past to be baptized again.
