Pipe Organ & Concert Series

Welcome to worship this morning at Plainfield United Methodist Church! On this Sunday, the third Sunday of the season of Lent, we present Jesus Christ Superstar as part of the PUMC Concert Series.

Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera with music by British composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by his frequent collaborator Tim Rice. It started as a rock opera concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971 – a debut that was widely panned by critics. The musical is sung-through, with no spoken dialogue, much in the same style as a classical opera. It focuses on the accounts in the Gospels of Jesus’ last week, from his arrival in Jerusalem to the crucifixion. It is not a modern telling of the Gospel narrative, but highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus that are not in the Bible.

The music we perform today in worship is the original Broadway version with full orchestra. While many Broadway musicals (including those by Andrew Lloyd Webber) began paring down the number of musicians in the orchestra pit during the 80s and 90s, listen for sounds from the strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion and even guitars that add to the drama of this story.

To each of the characters portrayed in the musical, Jesus means something different. To historians, Jesus remains an enigma. This presentation gives each of us the opportunity to explore and reflect on the question, “Who is Jesus and what does he mean to me?”
